Captain Robert Wilson (1806-1888) was a mariner and sailor. In 1817, Robert and his brothers (William Wilson and George Wilson) and their mother and seven sisters immigrated from Ireland to Canada, after the death of their father, John Wilson. Robert lived on 41 King Street (also owned houses on 23 King Street, 311 Trafalgar Road, and 187 Dundas Street North, called "Mariner's Home") Robert started a maritime career at the age of 14, He became the Master of the"Lady Colborne", built at William Chisholm's yard in 1830. Captain Wilson aided many escaping slaves across the lake to freedom in Oakville. Grateful escapers gathered annually at his "Mariner's' home at 311 Trafalgar Road *Possibly* stole a cutlass from England's Royal Guard (marked with the cipher of King George); the cutlass is still retained by Robert Wilson's descendants. Brother William and George also became ship's Captains |
