Description |
Ollie Johnson can be seen on the right. All other individuals are unidentified. Ollie Johnson was the best athlete in Oakville for several decades. He was the brother of Rosebud Johnson, and grew up in Oakville. A World War Veteran (Royal Canadian Legion 114), he went on to win several competitions. In 1918, he was on the Canadian Overseas Championship Team, won the 60-yard dash in 1921, and became the FIRST gold medalist in the (then newly opened) Coliseum in Toronto's Expo. After playing for the "Oaks" Baseball team, Ollie finally retired in the 1950s. In 1975, he quoted to the "Oakville Beaver": "We've got the greatest country in the world- Canada. And particularily, Ontario. And the best of all is Oakville. After 83 years, I should know." |
