293 Macdonald Road- Campbell Residence |
Description |
Donald Campbell worked as the Toll Gate Keeper for the Trafalgar, Esquesing and Erin Road Company, which was a plank road running north from Colborne Street (now Trafalgar Road). The company was started by George K. Chisholm and business associates. Hazel Matthews indicates that Mr. Campbell operated the toll gate at the junction of the 6th and 7th lines. He came to Canada with the Imperial forces at the time of the Rebellion, and after being discharged from the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders in 1842, settled in Oakville. He married a sister of Mrs. John Urquhart. In 1856, he built the house on 34 Division Street, which still stands to this day. |
