  6. Colborne Street, 1930s - Now called Lakeshore Road East. Shows early Loblaws grocery store and a Lakeshore Bus along the left of the picture. Input received from Bob Heath on the small black dot suspended over the middle of Lakeshore Road at Thomas Street in this picture: "Once upon a time there was only one police patrol car and one policeman on duty in the evening and night shifts. No two way radios then, no one in the police station to answer the phone. Almost all phone calls were handled by the old manual switch board at the corner of Randall and Dundas St. (now Trafalgar Road). If a call for police came in during those off hours a switch board operator would turn on a light, a red light. And guess where that was. The often sole police officer on duty, seeing the red light on would go to the telephone switch building to get the message. That light could be seen from near Douglas Ave to past Kerr St. My Dad saw it often on his night shifts in the only available police patrol car in the early 50s."

  8. Colborne Street, 7 views - Different views of Colborne Street (now Lakeshore Road East). Taken for the "Norwich Plan" on April 22nd, 1962. The first 2 pictures show the north side of Colborne Street between Dunn Street and George Street and shows Fraser Hardware Store. The third picture is looking west from Dunn Street. The fourth picture is looking west from the north-west corner of George Street and Colborne Street. The fifth picture is looking east from Dunn Street and the sixth picture is looking in the same direction but shows the north side of Colborne Street. The final, seventh picture is looking east from the north-east corner of George Street.

  11. Colborne Street/ Lakeshore Road East Postcard. - Main Street in the early 1900's. The back reads: "Dear Friend, I left the reply to the V. Card to hunt C - or Jessie but C- says neither of them wrote. Write when and where to meet you and some of us will be there. Sorry I have been so long in answering. M. Orr." It is addressed to "Miss Adelia Douglans, Lakeside, Ont."

  12. Colonel George Chisholm Jr. (1792-1872) - Col. George Chisholm (1792-1872) was born in Fort Erie, Canada. He was one of nine children of George Chisholm (Sr.) (1752-1842) and Barbara McKenzie Chisholm (1758-1824). George Sr. was involved in building Fort Erie. He was the brother of William and John Chisholm. When he was six years old, the family moved to Upper Canada and settled first in Fort Erie before moving to Burlington. He took over the farm on Burlington Bay after his father died. He and his wife, Eliza McCarter, (1796-1851), had 7 children, who were all born on the farm: Alexander Murray Chisholm, (emigrated to Australia) Barbara Bell (Chisholm) Cooper (1817-1860), Amanda Fitzallen (Chisholm) McKay (1822-1845), Duncan Chisholm (1824-1888), William King Chisholm (1825-1884), George Brock Chisholm (1828-1884), and Daniel Black Chisholm (1832-1899) When his brother William went bankrupt in 1842, George lost the farm. He, Eliza and her mother are buried in the cemetery on the southeast corner of Dundas and Guelph Line.

  13. Colonel William Chisholm (1788-1842) - William Chisholm (1788-1842) fought in the War of 1812 and in 1816 he settled on a farm on Dundas Street (now Trafalgar Road) in Nelson Township. Here he established a general store and soon became a leading merchant in the area. In 1827 he owned 5 schooners which he used to transport his goods. He was also a large active part of public affairsin the early 1820's. In 1831 he purchased an area of Crown Reserve land near the mouth of The Sixteen and obtained permission to build the first Oakville Harbour. Throughout his years living in Oakville he was a very influencial character owning multiple areas of land and building numerous buildings while continuing to be a flourishing merchant. He and his wife, Rebecca Silverthorn Chisholm (1795-1865) had TEN children: Andrew Chisholm (1813-1813), George King Chisholm (1814-1874), John Alexander Chisholm (1816-1843), Robert Kerr Chisholm (1819-1858), William McKenzie Chisholm (1821-1852), Esther Ann Romain (nee Chisholm) (1818-1911), Mary Jane MacDougald (nee Chisholm) (1826-1891), Rebecca Elizabeth Howse (nee Chisholm) (1829-1865), Thomas Charles Chisholm (1832-1873), James Bell FOrsyth Chisholm (1835-1868), and Barbara Amanda Wilson (nee Chisholm) (1839-1868).

  15. Commins Music Hall - This elaborate music hall was built in 1894 by J. E. Commins on the north-east corner of Colborne Street (now Lakeshore Road) and Dundas Street (now Trafalgar Road). He has a line-up of shows such as Pauline Johnson performing recitations, Sheridan's "The Rivals" performed by Leroy Kenney, "Mrs Jarley's WaxWorks" and "Ten Night in a Bar Room". It burned down in 1898 with suspicion that it was purposefully set on fire as it was not a very profitable business.

  16. Commodore Cecil Gustavus Marlatt (1854-1928) - On his boat, the "Aggie". Cecil Gustavus Marlatt (1854-1928) was the son of Stafford Marlatt and the brother of Wilbur Triller Marlatt. He was the Husband of Agnes Waldie. During his lifetime, he was the President of the Oakville Liberal Club, and in 1908, he helped form the Oakville Water and Light Commission. He also owned the yacht "Aggie", which he named after his first wife. His second wife was Bird Marlatt. He was the father of Betty Marlatt and Kenneth Dean Marlatt.

  17. Commodore Owen Connor Struan Robertson (1907-1994) - Also known as O.C.S. Robertson. Owen Connor Struan Robertson (1907-1994) was born in Victoria, British Columbia. In World War II, he served in the Royal Canadian Navy. He worked aboard several ships, including the "S.S. Volunteer" (which Owen helped save from an explosion), and the "H.C.M.S. Labrador". He was awarded the George Medal (GM) and named an Officer of the Order of Canada (OC) in 1970, in recognition for his bravery during World War II. Fun fact: He was 6 feet 7 inches tall, and nicknamed "Long Robbie".

  18. Commodore Robert Williams, (1845-1924) - Capt. Robert Williams (1845-1924) Besides the foundry, John Doty owned and operated several small steamers which ferried people between Toronto and Toronto island. Known as "The Doty line" whose Commodore was Captain Robert Wilson. The small Fleet wintered in Oakville Harbour from the middle of the 1880s. Captain Williams lived in a small house facing the lake approximately at the site now occupied by the old Post Office. He was the son of John Williams (1817-1884), a hotel proprietor. He lived on 191 King Street.
